Dinah Johnson

Dinah Johnson is the author of several picture books including All Around Town: The Photographs of Richard Samuel Roberts, Black Magic (illus. by Gregory Christie) and Quinnie Blue (illus. by James Ransome), all published by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers. As an essayist, she contributed to State of the Heart: South Carolina Writers on the Places They Love and to Literary Dogs and Their South Carolina Writers. As the child of an Army colonel and a teacher, Dinah grew up all around the world, but will always call South Carolina home. So it means a lot to her to have another life as Dr. Dianne Johnson, professor of English at the USC. She is a pioneering scholar who was instrumental in uncovering the history of African American children’s literature. Dinah’s greatest joy is visiting schools and getting letters from children. One of her favorite reads: “You had made my heart sing.”
