Today is Wednesday, October 23, 2013. We have just a few days before the Symposium in Columbia. Are you ready? I should be, I probably am, but I’m worried that I’m forgetting something important. I have the schedule; I know what sessions I want to sit in on. Most of this year’s faculty is new to SCWW and I can’t wait to meet them and learn from them. I know where I’m having lunch. The post-Symposium gathering should be fun and I can’t wait. I’m also excited to see everyone again. Some great people pass through this conference each year and I look forward to seeing all of you again.
We are trying out a new model this year: a one-day event without a key note speaker. When the 2013 survey comes out, please let me know how this was for you. Tell us what you liked and what you didn’t; we need to know so that we can plan for the future. Would you like to see this model repeated? If so, why and how often? If not, why not?
For this year, we are at the Metropolitan Columbia Convention Center (1101 Lincoln Street, Columbia, SC 29201) with registration opening at 8AM on Saturday morning. We will have our annual business meeting at 9AM, please join us for that we have lots of announcements for you, including the Carrie McCray award winners.
After the final question has been asked at our Agent, Author, and Editor Q&A Panel the After-Party Open Mic starts. Beth Browne, our Vice-President, is hosting this event starting at 5:30. Beth says there will be readings, giveaways, and lots of fun (follow this link for details). Come to the Flying Saucer which is just around the corner on Park Street. They have beverages as well as food if you want it. This should be a fantastic evening out and I look forward to seeing many of you there.
And starting soon, you will hear from the 2014 Conference chair. I won’t spoil anything here, but the 2014 three-day event should be lots of fun. We’ll be back at the Myrtle Beach Hilton for what could be our final time at that location.
This is my last year volunteering for and working on the Annual Writers’ Conference. Part of me is sad, I’ve been doing this forever it seems, and I know I’ll miss it. Mostly though, I’m excited about this great time for SCWW. We are in the black financially. We have a new board election coming up soon, ask Ginny Padgett about joining the Board of Directors. From here 2014 looks good!
What will the next year bring? New opportunities are out there for me, you and all of SCWW. Who knows what will happen, but I look forward to what could be for all of us.
