Member Benefits

The South Carolina Writers Association is a literary arts non-profit organization offering a supportive environment for people to become better writers no matter where they are in their writing endeavors.

SCWA provides support to members by offering a wide variety of tools, education, events and resources. These include:

Critique Groups

Writers need readers. At the core of writer learning is access to other writers and the ability to submit work for critique and feedback in a supportive and constructive environment. Membership provides access to chapters across the state.

Annual Conference/Retreat

The annual SCWA conference/retreat brings together accomplished writers and faculty, giving members the opportunity to improve writing skills, network with other writers, and learn more about the publishing world. Writers can have their pieces critiqued by professionals in the industry. These events are competitively priced with discounted registration fees for members, delivering maximum value for cost.

Regional Workshops

Throughout the year, SCWA fosters workshops across the state on a variety of topics including craft development, query/synopsis writing, and how to self-publish and promote one’s work. Members enjoy discounted registration fees for these events.

Publications

SCWA offers a publishing opportunity for new and veteran writers with The Petigru Review (TPR), a digital literary journal that includes fiction, nonfiction and poetry. It also accepts website content, such as reviews and craft essays. Through a competitive submissions process, the best in writing across the state is highlighted.

The deadline and guidelines for submissions to  TPR for 2023 will be available soon. Check the TPR page for updates.

The Quill Newsletter

The Quill, a monthly email newsletter, is a helpful resource to keep members up to date on all the latest happenings across the organization. From news on upcoming events and submission opportunities to insights on writing and updates from local chapters and members’ published works, this newsletter is a great way to stay informed about the SCWA.

Among the many benefits of membership, perhaps the most rewarding is the camaraderie, the experience of being part of the South Carolina writing community.
